Course Overview

Decheng Cui is a multifaceted figure whose work spans art creation, curation, and education, underpinned by a rich foundation in both art theory and practice. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), one of the most influential art programs in the United States. Cui’s work has been exhibited internationally in major art cities such as Seoul, Venice, and across the United States and China, garnering significant attention and recognition from the global art community.

In Cui’s art history course, students not only engage with theoretical knowledge but also gain insight into the inner world of artistic creation through his firsthand experiences as an artist. This course extends beyond the traditional art history curriculum, exploring the inspirations, challenges, and emotional depth of the creative process from an artist’s perspective. By integrating his own creative journey, Cui guides students to interpret classical works from an artist’s point of view, delving into the ideas and emotions that underpin these pieces.

This course offers a distinctive learning experience, equipping students with a solid foundation in core art history while providing a profound understanding of the genesis of artworks through a creative lens. It encourages students to develop a deeper critical engagement with art, fostering both intellectual exploration and practical insight.
