Course Objective

This course aims to teach students the fundamentals of tufting, operational techniques, and creative approaches, enabling them to master tufting skills from scratch and independently complete a personalized piece.

(Four Sundays) 12/8, 12/15, 12/22, 12/29; 1:00PM-4:00PM
at 4C Gallery Studio
 
Lesson 1: Introduction to Tufting and Tools
Theory:
1.1 Origins and Modern Development of Tufting (20 mins)
1.2 Overview of Tufting Tools and Materials (10 mins)
1.3 Exploring Color and Texture Basics (10 mins)
1.4 Safe Operation and Tool Maintenance (5 mins)
Practice:
1.5 Basic Operation Practice (2 hours)


Lesson 2: Design and Pattern Conceptualization
Theory:
2.1 Design Concepts and Composition Techniques (40 mins)
2.2 Sketching and Pattern Conversion (10 mins)
2.3 Practical Tips and Tricks (10 mins)
Practice:
2.4 Pattern Design and Sketching (2 hours 30 mins)


Lesson 3: Tufting Details and Techniques
Theory:
3.1 Techniques for Color Transitions and Gradients (20 mins)
3.2 Controlling Dimension and Texture (20 mins)
Practice:
3.3 Independent Creation and Problem-Solving (2 hours 50 mins)


Lesson 4: Final Touches and Completion
Theory:
4.1 Fixing and Finishing Techniques (10 mins)
4.2 Backside Finishing and Glue Fixation (10 mins)
4.3 Displaying and Post-Creation Care (10 mins)
Practice:
4.4 Final Refinements and Presentation (2 hours 30 mins)

Preparation

The gallery will provide all materials, including the white paper textbook for each class.

Course Outcomes

Final Project

Each student will complete a personalized tufting piece, which can serve as either a decorative or functional item.

Skill Mastery

Students will fully master the use of the tufting gun, pattern design, and operational techniques, gaining the ability to create independently.

Future Development Advice

Based on students' final works, the instructor will provide resources and skill practice recommendations for continued learning, encouraging students to further explore the possibilities of fiber arts.

Yuzhe Yan (Ashley) employs the technique of "body deformation" to create hybrid creatures and immersive artworks, exploring the body's potential as a limitless space for imagination while uncovering the complexities of gender, species, and identity.

She has constructed a free space called purlieu to challenge power and control under capitalism. In her ALIEN series, she uses fantastical beings and undefined settings to convey psychological metaphors and dramatic tension.


With years of experience in artistic practice and professional work, her expertise in fine arts extends to commercial curation, public sculpture, and art education, embodying the versatility of a professional female artist.

Yuzhe Yan is an artist, a curator, and an educator. She is 

currently serving as a curator at Taiwan's 121 ArtSpace Gallery, Yan Yuzhe has exhibited her works in various locations, including Hangzhou, Suzhou, Shanghai, Taiwan, and The Box Gallery in Los Angeles. In November, she participated in the Kaohsiung Art Fair in Taiwan, and she is set to showcase her work at the Los Angeles Art Show and the Tokyo Art Fair in Japan next January.

Her professional background spans fine arts, sculpture, curatorial work, and art education.
